Catering to the Community
History of the Breadwinners Program
Many women have culinary talents and interests, cultivated over a lifetime of cooking for family and friends. So when exploring opportunities to become self-employed, these women start with what they know and love best – food. But there are many challenges in starting food-related businesses, including health department regulations which require products to be prepared in a commercial kitchen, packaging and labeling standards and procedures, as well as, the costs and complexities of distribution.
As women were coming to New Visions, New Ventures for assistance in starting their food businesses, the organization recognized there was a growing need in the community for a program which would help entrepreneurs overcome the obstacles to working in the food industry. So in late 2005, New Visions, New Ventures launched a special initiative designed to provide limited-income female entrepreneurs with targeted assistance in building businesses which provide baked goods, specialty foods or catering services. Breadwinners is the outgrowth of this initiative, and today is a comprehensive program that provides participants with the knowledge, skills and resources they need to start and operate successful food businesses.
